Diabetes-Friendly, Kid-Approved Back-to-School Snacks

Some of the country has already gone back to school, and, for the rest of us, it’s impending. Stores are full of back-to-school supplies, and getting your kids (and house) in order is probably top of mind. One thing to add to your to-do list: finding delicious low-carb snacks that your kids can enjoy without spiking their blood sugar.

Diabetes Daily did the work for you and came up with a list of 10 delicious and diabetes-friendly snacks that are also kid-approved! Every snack on the list contains under 20 grams (g) of carbs per serving, which should make bolusing and managing your child’s blood sugar a little less stressful.

Make sure to keep your eye out on your next shopping trip for these 10 low-carb snacks!

HighKey Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are widely available in stores like Target, but you can also order on their website or through Amazon. This is the perfect treat for your child … and you!

Mini Quest Bars

This is my new favorite snack on the go. I never have to worry about it affecting my blood sugars since it only has 2 g net carbs. As an added bonus, it also contains 8 g of protein per bar. These taste absolutely amazing and are perfect to throw into your child’s lunchbox. They come in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookies and Cream flavors.

Parm Crisps Variety Packs

Don’t walk, run to your local store to pick up these delicious crisps with a protein-packed punch! It’s hard to believe this snack contains only 1 g of net carbohydrates and 13 g of protein per serving. The variety pack comes in Original, Sour Cream and Onion, and Cheddar, so your child will be sure to find a flavor they love!

Cabot Smoky Bacon Snacking Sticks

Cheese sticks make for an easy low-carb snack but can be a bit boring. Vermont’s Cabot Creamery makes it more exciting by adding bits of bacon in your cheese stick! At only 1 g of carbs and 3 g of protein in each, this is a nutritious snack that will allow you to worry about other things instead of your child’s blood sugar.

Fage Split Cups

This Greek yogurt brings refreshing fruit to the mix, cutting the bitterness and adding a sweetness that your child will love. It comes in an array of flavors, including Strawberry, Peach, Mixed Berries, Blueberry, Black Cherry, Mango Passion Fruit, and Strawberry Watermelon. All the flavors have 12 g of carbs, making this a smart choice.

BOOMCHICKAPOP Sea Salt Popcorn Multipack

If you or your child are suckers for the salty and savory taste of popcorn, here is a great lower-carb alternative. Each individual portion contains only 100 calories, 14 g net carbs, and 2 g of protein. Popcorn is hard to stop eating, but individual portions make it much easier for your child to dose insulin precisely.

Atkins Chocolate Chip Cheesecake Dessert Bar

This is the perfect snack after a meal when you feel the urge to have something sweet. These bars taste great and contain only 2 g net carbs and 8 g of protein and 8 g of fiber, too! They are gluten-free, too, a perfect snack for your child to indulge in during their rigorous day!

Cali’flour Keto Crackers

These tasty and crunchy low-carb crackers make for a great snack for your kids to pack for lunch. They come in Sea Salt, Cheese, and Italian Herb flavors, and all contain 2 g net carbs and 6 g of protein; they are also gluten-free! Add some protein to make this a more filling snack. Some peanut butter (only if allowed at school) or cheese makes the perfect accompaniment!

Quest Protein Chips

This delicious substitute for the ever-popular Dorito comes pretty darn close if you ask me. It is reminiscent of the original in both flavor and texture, with a nice crunch to boot. The original Nacho Cheese flavor contains only 4 g net carbs but packs a protein punch with a whopping 18 g. These chips also come in Cheddar and Sour Cream, BBQ, Loaded Taco, Sour Cream and Onion, Chili Lime, Ranch, and Spicy Sweet Chili; it’s hard to choose! This makes for a great school snack that other kids may even want to trade for.

Catalina Crunch

This delicious mixture of nuts, chickpea pretzels, and keto-friendly Catalina Crunch cereal makes for a delicious and nutritious snack on the go. It comes in Traditional, Cheddar, Creamy Ranch and Spicy Kick flavors, so there is something for everyone. Each serving contains 5 g net carbs and up to 8 g of protein. I’ve been enjoying all of Catalina Crunch’s products. This one is a must-try.

Finding prepared low-carb snacks that you can grab off the shelf makes heading back to school at least a little bit less hectic. Your kids can pack their own snack, and you can rest assured that it is healthy and will not wreak havoc on their blood sugars. Make sure to try some of these suggestions. Your child will thank you!
